St. Thomas Aquinas JV Boys Soccer vs. Kingswood Knights   9-14-05

The Saints had their third home game in a row.  It was a hot summer day and the state had issued poor air quality warnings.  While this might effect a normal team, it wouldn't phase any team that had gone through double sessions with Coach Devereaux.

Players stretching to get ready for the game after playing Frisbee.

Game Captain Mark Miller never had to call the toss because during the sportsmanship lecture the referee asked a trivia question which Bryan Hennigan answered correctly. They gave the Saints the ball and let Kingswood choose field side.  How that came about I have a feeling that both referees forgot a coin.

St. Thomas started out with Lenis Kenter and Brett Snyder at Striker.  The Midfielder were Ryan Price, Taylor MacDonald, Sean Waters and Keith Hallock.  The defense was Matt Roginski, Nick Blunier, Tom Gibney and Mark Miller.  Collin McBride was in net for the Saints.

Price moves to pressure a Knight player.

The Saints midfield collapses on the Kingswood players.

St. Thomas controlled the ball well against the Knights.  Players were talking, passing and supporting each other with confidence.

Gibney heads out a ball thwarting a Knight attack.

At the seven minute mark Tom Carroll and Owen Cook went in as strikers.  Midfielders Bryan Hennigan, Justin Guilbert, Jamie and Jerry Phontharaksa entered the game. Andy Stone saw first action as Stopper.

Stone sends a pass out to Hennigan on the wing.

Peter Bergeron and Peter Shwaegerle went in at the 14 minute mark as Strikers.

Shortly after they entered the field the Saints mounted an attack and Shwaegerle sent a pass across the Kingswood net and Bergeron had a wide open goal in front of him as he sent his shot up over the cross bar into the woods missing the first goal scoring opportunity.

MacDonald sends a support pass back as the midfield moves up on the attack.

A Kingswood player prepares to take one of their two shots on goal in the first half.  The game was controlled by St. Thomas, but the Knights were able to keep up their defense for the first 25 minutes of the game stopping every attack by the Saints.  St. Thomas appeared to be in better condition though and with the short subbing shifts were able to keep constant pressure on Kingswood.

At 28:16 Macdonald scored off a long high chip shot from an assist by Miller at sweeper.

Hallock steps up to stop a knight.

Hallock continues on with the play after running over the Kingswood player.

At 31:02 Guilbert Scored off an assist by Stone. This was Gilbert's first goal of the season.

Roginski heads away a ball feeling like a giant when the Knights play their two small strikers.

At the 32 minute mark "T-Mac" took another shot that pinged the cross bar.

At 34:40 Jerry Phontharaksa scored off an assist from Guilbert.

Stone clears out a ball stopping a Kingswood attack.

At 38:52 St. Thomas  scored their fourth goal when Snyder assisted Shwaegerle.

The First half ended with the score Saints 4 - Knights 0.

The second half saw St. Thomas moving some defensive players up to offense.  Starting strikers were Blunier and Gibney. Midfielders MacDonald, Hallock, Roginski and Snyder.  Stone at stopper, Guilbert and Jamie Phontharaksa at fullbacks and Miller at sweeper.

The Knights keeper comes off his line to scoop up a ball.

MacDonald sends a through ball to Gibney.

At 43:18 Roginski scores his first goal of the season from the midfield on an assist by "T-Mac".

Five Minutes later at 48:18 Gibney scores his first goal of the season on an assist from Waters.

At 51:07 Kenter scored off an assist by Gibney picking up his first goal of the season.

56:03 Bergeron makes up for the first half miss by scoring on an assist by Waters

67:30 Cook scored off a cross pass from Carroll.

The Saints return after scoring the 10th goal of the game at 77:22 Hallock Scored off an assit by Blunier playing striker this time...

Mark Miller as Striker in the last 6 minutes of the game...

The game ended with St. Thomas up 10-0.  The Saints out shot the Kights 27-2.

Collin McBride gets his first shut-out of the season thanks to great defense by more than just the normal crew.  This 10 goal win is the largest margin in my 3 years of coaching at St. Thomas.

St. Thomas travels to Oyster River next Friday.
