St. Thomas Aquinas JV Boys Soccer vs. Coe Brown Bears   10-21-05

The Saints played their third game in a row today at Coe Brown.

Game Captains Mark Miller, Lenis Kenter and Peter Shwaegerle went out to represent the team.

The Saints started out with their successful defense of Matt Roginski as Stopper, Nick Blunier and Tom Gibney as Fullbacks and Mark Miller as Sweeper.  Midfielders Andy Stone, Justin Guilbert, Jamie Phontharaksa and Bryan Hennigan.  Peter Shwaegerle and Lenis Kenter were the strikers.  Colin McBride was guarding the net for St. Thomas

Today was not a day to take photos from the bench side of the field.

About 3 minutes into the game Roginski came over to the side line to get someone to hand him his mouth guard.  A minute later Miller came over to the sideline to get his mouth guard too.  The Referee picked up on this and asked if he should check the rest of my players.

8 minutes into the game the strikers were switched as Tom Carroll and Owen " Taco" Cook as went in.

At the 10 minute mark Taylor MacDonald, Keith Hallock, Brent Snyder and  Jerry Phontharaksa went in as midfielders.

A few minutes later Roginski was hurt stopping a Coe Brown attack and Stone went in to replace him.

16 minutes into the game Sean Waters and Ryan Price went in as strikers.

18 minutes into the game Coe brown broke on the St. Thomas net and Miller came in to take the ball away and was fouled hard by the Black Bear player.  Miller came out while Stone moved to sweeper, Gibney went to stopper and MacDonald went in at midfield.

It was a very physical game and only one referee was making calls, the other referee appeared to have a defective whistle.

At the 22 minute mark Waters took a beautiful shot that hit the cross bar just missing.  Miller returned to the game as sweeper while Coe Brown was setting up for a goal kick.

Roginski returned to play stopper at 25:20.

At 35:22 McBride came off his line to make a save.  The hard shot rebounded off him and back to the Coe Brown player.  He took another shot towards the open goal and just when it looked like a goal, Miller came out of nowhere to kick the ball wide.

The Saints lined up for their 9th corner kick of the half and were unable to capitalize again.

At 39:37 Coe Brown scored a controversial goal.  Roginski had cleared the ball out, but the referee said it had gone across the goal line into the net before he got to it.

 

St. Thomas was down 0-1 at the half.  They had out shot Coe Brown 8-4.  

The Saints took the field for the second half . McBride, Miller, Roginski, Blunier and Gibney were in at defense.  The midfield was Hennigan, Gibney, Jamie Phontharaksa and Stone.  Kenter and Shwaegerle were up front.

At 50:31 Carroll and Cook went in as strikers.

At 53:54 Brent Snyder went in at outside midfield.

Guilbert sent a pass over to Cook who sent a left footed rocket into the Coe Brown net at 56:49.  The score was all tied up.

The game got even more physical as time ran down and players fought for control of the ball.

Coe Brown switched to a defensive game leaving one striker up front and everyone else back.

St. Thomas made a number of attacks that ended in saves made by the Black Bear keeper.

Jamie Phontharaksa took a shot that pinged off the upper left corner of the goal just missing at 78:50.

At the end of regulation time the game was tied 1-1,  the Saints had out shot the Black Bears 16-6 and now had to prepared for overtime once again with Coe Brown.  The overtime is played for two 10 minute periods and it is golden goal - which means the first goal wins.

Gibney came off the field injured and unable to return.  St. Thomas took the field  with Cook and Carroll at Strikers, Kenter, Guilbert, Hennigan and Jamie Phontharaksa at midfield and a defense of McBride, Miller , Bluiner, Stone and Roginski.

The Saints came out fighting hard for control.  Coe Brown was playing a defensive game hoping for a break on long ball.

At 81:40 Carroll sent a pass over to Cook who headed it towards the net, but the keeper made a save.  The first 10 minute overtime ended and the teams switched ends of field.  The Second 10 minutes were even more of a battle.

The second overtime period ended with neither team scoring.  The game ends with the score still tied up 1-1.  The Saints out shot the black bears 22-8.

                                                       

St. Thomas will go to Oyster River tomorrow to play two games in the end of season tournament.  They will do it after playing three games in three days, this last one was 100 minutes long with overtime.
