10-4-08 Evening work on Cape Ann Rail.

Crews were working late Saturday afternoon to clear the Port of Salem yard and get all the freight delivered so they
could take Sunday off to watch the Patriots and the Red Sox play.

ST #9042 brings a string of box cars and reefers down to Beverly.

Standing trackside just off the end of the bridge catwalk you can see the string box cars coming across.

The next train out is a Cape Ann Rail tank train moving diesel fuel.

Our track side photographer gets a great shot of the line of tank cars.

Here the ST Train holds at the signal while a PDLX train prepares to leave the yard.
The engineer is wondering if he has enough time to get out the fishing rod.

The PDLX Freight is headed up by their two SD40-2's

One of the PDLX freight cars was left derailed in the yard and Suleski Transportation's wreck train
works to re-rail it.

The wreck train crew is used to cleaning up after other crews.

Another Cape Ann Rail tank train comes through the valley.

Our track side photographer has moved his position for the next few trains.

The PDLX train heads over the span.

The Suleski Transportation freight heads between five sisters.

The setting sun lights up the cars as they come out of the cut.

You can see the engine tilt as it comes off the span onto the elevated curve where it can pick up speed.

The Dispatcher has called and asked ST 9042 to hold its position. (again)

The PDLX units hold the main as they split their train to pick up more freight.

Coal hoppers for the Salem power plant are full from the ship in port and ready to go.

The PDLX train has enough power to add the extra cars.

Here our photographer catches the PDLX Train in focus with the ST train across the valley in the background.

Then changes the focus.

Here the PDLX mixed freight snakes through five sisters.

The Quincy Northern SD40-2 enters Cape Ann trackage, its nice to see the unit running.

QN #8444 pulls across the arch bridge heading towards Beverly yard.

Someone forgot to tighten the breaks as a string of coal hoppers rolls slowly out to foul the yard switch.
Can't you just hear the blame being passed....

Once again the dispatcher radios and tell ST #9042 to hold its position.
I'm thinking the fish will be biting now that the sun is setting.

PDLX is now returning with empty hoppers from the Salem power plant.

The Cape Ann Rail tank train heads through five sisters cut with the PDLX train coming around the bend behind it.

Here the engineer of the PDLX train comes through the five sisters cut and notices the back of his
train - It isn't that long he just dropped half of it when a coupler broke.

You can se the lights come on as the train reverses to go back and get it's other half.

Once the coupler is fixed and the train is back together it's back on its way to Beverly yard.

The units pick up speed as they come off the bridge and hit the elevated curve.

Another derailment for the PDLX train, I think they are trying to move too much freight in one trip.
There are rumors that one of the owners is, what's the nice New England word for cheap, oh yea - frugal.
He has probably figured the difference between fuel expense and crew costs for an extra trip.

The ST wreck train heads out to re-rail the car and get things moving on Cape Ann Rail.
ST #6114 an SD45 pulls the crane in a hurried move.

Another Cape Ann Rail Tank Train sneaks into Beverly yard while other trains are held up.

As the PDLX engine crew backs up to couple to the re-railed car they derail a tank car.

Lucky for everyone nothing leaks from the tank

A Cape Ann Rail tank train of fish guts is held up coming out of Salem yard.
The PDLX Engine clear the main so the ST wreck train can come back.
The PDLX Management may being making extra money from the large freight, but wait till the get the bills
from Suleski Transportation and Cape Ann Rail.

Freight started moving quickly after the tank car was re-railed.

PDLX last freight out to Quincy and Milton.

Cape Ann Rails last train heading towards Beverly yard with tanks full of fish guts.

Suleski Transportation's last freight out to Amesbury as the sun sets.
