Compiling an "all-time" roster for most railroads, especially large railroads that began in the 19th century, is very difficult.
For many railroads, such as the New York Central, its nearly impossible to accurately list EVERY locomotive ever owned by the company.
But the NYSW is probably just small enough that an accurate all-time roster shouldnt be too difficult to determine. hopefully!

The steam era of the NYSW is complicated and confusing, mainly due to the Erie railroad control between the years 1898 and 1940.
But if we divide up the NYSW steam era into it's three clear divisions, it might be managable..

Steam era #1 - Beginning of the NYSW to Erie control - 1881 to 1898. (17 years)
Steam era #2 - The Erie Years - 1898 - 1940. (42 years)
Steam era #3 - Independance to "end of steam" - 1940 - 1947. (7 years)

The following steam roster data is compiled from four different books, and issues of "Railroad Magazine"
The New York Susquehanna & Western Railroad. - by  Robert E. Mohowski
Erie Power - by Al Stauffer
Susquehanna  - by John Krause and Ed Crist.
The History of the New York Susquehanna &  Western Railroad -  by Walter Arndt Lucas, published by
the Railroadians of America in 1939
and reprinted and updated in 1980.

And from NYSW Steam locomotive rosters printed in "Railroad Magazine" April 1941, October 1943 and November 1943 issues.
Thanks to Richard Palmer for providing scans of the Railroad Magazine rosters and articles.

there are some roster discrepncies between the books!
when books disagree, I am going with the newest book (Mohowski)
assuming the latest data is the correct data, but this may or may not be a correct assumption! ;)

There are also two other NYSW books which I do not yet have in my collection:
Susquehanna from Shortlines to Stackpacks - by Ken Karlewicz and Scott Hartley
New York Susquehanna & Western, In Color. - Morning Sun Books.

And as always, I recieve lots of help on these lists from the great railfans and historians
at www.railroad.net, www.railfan.net and www.rypn.org. (see links below)
thanks!

Susquehanna Steam Locomotives:

Steam Era #1 - 1881-1898

"Prior to Erie Control, Susquehanna operated with 87 Locomotives" - Mohowski

nearly all of these 87 locomotives were of the 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 type.

Even though the Susquehanna was not fully an Erie subsiderary until 1898, NYSW locomotives were ordered in "sub sets" of Erie locomotive orders before then,

With the same specifications as the Erie engines, but lettered "Susquehanna" on the tender, and given an independent NYSW 2-digit number series.

Steam Era #2 -The Erie Years - 1898 - 1940

The Erie fully controlled the NYSW during these years, but the NYSW had its own locomotives lettered "Susquehanna"

and NYSW locos also had an independant number series from the Erie, NYSW locos generally had 2-digit road numbers, (except for the Russians) while Erie locos had 4-digit numbers.

This is going to be the most difficult era to straighten out when it comes to what locos were actually assigned to the NYSW..its quite nebulous because of the Erie control.

For the purposes of this webpage, I am going to include any locomotive that was ever lettered "Susquehanna" on the tender, regardless of if it was leased or owned.

The following is the best I can do so far for a complete NYSW roster
for the years 1898-1940, it includes the 1905 Susquehanna Roster from the 1939 Walter Arndt Lucas book. Which shows a mix of original  NYSW locos, plus some new ones from the Erie.
Class names are Erie classes, not the original NYSW classes. In addition to the 1905 roster, other locos
that were known to be on the roster before 1940 are below. A total of xx locos are on this
1898-1940 roster, however not all operated at the same time!

"The greatest number of locomotives owned at any one time by the NYS&W was 101. This number was reached in 1911 and continued until 1916, finally diminishing to the insignificant two owned in 1938."
-Lucas, 1939.

"In 1920, 92 locomotives were in use on The Susquehanna" - Mohowski

The roster below, for 1898 to 1940, includes locomotives on the roster *before* 1898,
which remained on the roster *after* 1898, and many of the same locomotives are seen in the roster above.

Only 13 locomoties are listed below! While it is said that the NYSW had 101 locomotives in 1911!
Clearly this is the most nebulous of the NYSW steam locomotive eras.
Its also possible a good deal of those 101 locomotives were actually owned by the Erie,
and leased to the NYSW..perhaps even leased, but still lettered for the NYSW.

Steam Era #3 -Independence to "end of steam" - 1940-1947

The NYSW gained it's independence from the Erie in 1940.

Between 1940 and 1947, NYSW leased/owned a total of 31 Steam Locomotives in four wheel arrangements:

Five 0-6-0

Eight 4-6-0

Two 4-6-2 (but we have photos of FOUR!..perhaps renumburing? Or were there were actually four? Or..two were "Erie Years" pre-1940, and twp were Post-Erie)

Sixteen 2-10-0 (were they the SAME sixteen from pre-1940? Unknown..)

This era is more straight-forward and well documented, we should be able to figure it out with accuracy.

Numbers in RED indicate that specific locomotive is documented, with a photograph, as having been lettered for the Susquehanna.

Sadly, ALL steam locomotives listed above have been scrapped.
The current Susquehanna 2-8-2 #142 was built in 1989 in China.

Notes:

*Note 1
4010 - 4048, twenty B40-8's, were built in 1989 and financed with help from CSX to operate the stack trains.
(Susquehanna was temporarily operating the D&H, and the stack trains were run over the Conrail southern tier main via D&H traffic rights)
With the loss of the stack trains when CP took over the D&H, these 20 units were returned to CSX around 1991.
4010 - 4048 only operated with NYSW a few short years between 1989 and 1991.

The other four B40-8's 4002, 4004, 4006 and 4008, operated with NYSW all through the 1990's and into the 21st
century, until being sold to the P&W in 2004 and 2005.

4006 (now P&W 4003) was in NYSW yellowjacket paint in July 2006, was repainted into P&W scheme by December 2006.
was the last yellowjacket B40-8.

All 24 B40-8's were built new in NYSW Yellowjacket paint.

*Note 2
231:1 and 233:1  were NYSW's first road diesels.
They were both requisitioned by the US govt and sent overseas for WWII.

(All 1941 Alco RS1 production was shipped overseas by the US govt for the war effort,
and all were rebuilt into RSD-1 types, with 6-axle trucks, including our two NYSW units)

They were replaced by 231:2 and 233:2 in 1943.

231:1 survives!
she went overseas in WWII along with sister 233:1, both converted to RSD1's (6-axle trucks)
231:1 returned to the USA after the war..her history is:
originally NYSW RS1 231:1 - then US Army 8000 - then to U.S. Navy 65-00575, then to Texas Industries 8000; Donated to the Age of Steam Museum in Dallas, Texas.
the "Age of Steam Museum" in Dallas is now called the "Museum of the American Railroad"

233:1 - Alaska RSD1 1085 - Alaska 1057 - US Army 8001 - nee NYSW 233:1 - scrapped 1965-67

see this page for more info on the WWII RSD's, including our two Susquehanna units.

*Note 3
Russian 2-10-0 notes.
2492 was the last decopod to operate, last day of operation - October 2, 1947
2454, 2472, 2481, and 2484 were returned to the Erie and sold, 2/4/1943, to Seaboard Air Line.
2435 and 2492 sold for scrap in september 1948, last two operating Russians.

*Note 4
Whitcombs 150 and 151, and GE 45 tonner 200,
all switched the Edgewater Seatrain operation.
200 replaced the two whitcombs in 1958.
200 was then sold to a mining operation in Quebec (Quebec Iron & Titanium) when the edgewater facility was shutdown. (year?)
200 was bought new in 1958, and survives today as Quebec Iron & Titanium #24
150 is preserved, the current fate of 151 is still unknown.

*Note 5
The eight Cartier Alcos and MLWs first arrived in Cohocton, NY in late 2002.
They sat there through all of 2003,
and in October 2004, the first unit arrived on the Susquehanna.
By August 2005 all eight were on the Susquehanna.
Click Here for the complete Cartier unit timeline on NY Alcos

The Cartier units operated with NYSW from 2004-2007, and in 2007 all eight were sold by NYSW to leasing companys RRPX and Alco-C,
who then leased them to the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville railroad.

*Note 6
Concerning U23B 2209.
I have recieved a few emails letting me know im missing "NYSW 2209" from the roster..actually im not..
because there has never been a NYSW 2209! ;)
The unit was always BDLX 2209 when it operated with NYSW..
BDLX is "Big Dog Leasing", related to RMDI in Pittston, PA.
The unit was never actually owned by NYSW..there are several references to "NYSW 2209" floating around the internet,
and some photos labeled as NYSW 2209..those are simply mistakes, errors, mislabeled photos.."NYSW 2209" has never existed.
In April, 2009 BDLX 2209 was being used a  test bed in Utica.

and possibly repaint them into NYSW yellow & black!!
(although repainting is probably just a rumour..it could happen, but is unlikely for awhile)

June 4, 2005
45 was reported outside the Utica shop numbured on the cab as NYSW 6366.
First ex-Cartier renumbured into the NYSW number scheme.
but still wearing the original Cartier colors.
She was being load tested, operating, nearly ready for service.

June 6, 2005
Cartier 43 confirmed operating.
77 was reported possibly operating a few months ago, that was false, she has not yet been operating.

It has been reported in past months that ex-Cartier 75 and 85 may be of interest to the WNYP.
but it has also been rumoured that WNYP doesnt want them, and they will also go to
the Susquehanna..which way is true isnt certain yet.
stay tuned....

August 1, 2005
2 of the ex-Cartier units were briefly renumbured in the 6300 series. and are now in the 3600 series.
Cartier 45 was the first renumbured, to 6366, photographic proof of renumbured 6366 taken on June 4, 2005.
On July 30, the unit was spotted renumbured a second time, this time to 3666.
So this unit went from Cartier 45 to NYSW 6366 to NYSW 3666. hopefully settled down now.
Cartier 43 was very briefly renumbured to 6370..perhaps only a few weeks in July 2005. by late July she was renumbured to 3670.
this unit went from Cartier 43 to NYSW 6370 to NYSW 3670.

Current ex-Cartier unit numbering status as of August 1, 2005:

41      - still #41, operating with NYSW
3670 - was briefly numbured 6370, perhaps only a few weeks in July,
was Cartier 43, operating with NYSW
3666 - was numbured 6366 for approx 2 months, June and July
was Cartier 45, operating with NYSW
47     - still #47, operating with NYSW
75     - still in Cohocton, not operating.
77     - with NYSW, but has not operated yet.
78     - still #78, operating with NYSW.
85     - still in Cohocton, not operating.

five of the eight are operating!
three still await a return to service.

August 19, 2005

The final two ex-Cartier units that remained in Cohocton, 75 and 85, arrived in Binghamton on 8-17-05.
they were renumbured to NYSW 3672 and 3674 before they left Cohocton.
that makes it official! all EIGHT of the "things" are now with Susquehanna!
as of 8-19-05, it isnt clear if 3672 and 3674 are operating yet.
The units were towed to Binghamton, not operating.
They never actually operated as SIXX 75 or RRPX 85,
they had those numbers "on paper", but were never physically lettered with those reporting marks and numbers,
they recieved their NYSW numbers before they left Cohocton.

September 19, 2005
M636 3672 first reported operating in binghamton.

October 10, 2005
7 of the 8 ex-Cartier units are now operating.
Only 77 is not operating, has freeze damage, still OOS in Utica.

5 of the units have been given their NYSW numbers.

3660 - 78, unrenumbured
3662 - 77, unrenumbured, only unit still OOS.
3664 - 41.

Snapshot of the Susquehanna Roster at the beginning of 2007:

click here for the January 2007 Roster table.

35 units on the Roster in January 2007

Susquehanna Utica Main (originally DL&W) is OOS between Chenengo Forks and Sherburne, due to flooding in June 2006.  see map here.
The line will likely be abandoned and not rebuilt.

both originally Conrail units, and among the very last U-boats built. built new for Conrail in May 1977. Units had their trucks changed at some point

March 2007 - SD40T-2's 3014 and 3016 head to Dansville for rebuilding.

and owned by the NYSW, same as the other Cartier units.
However it has never operated as, or been renumbured as, NYSW 3662. It's still OOS and has never operated with NYSW, it's a parts unit in Utica.

Only SD45 3614 in Dansville at this time..reports say she is too far gone, and likely will never be back in operation.

Summer 2007 - All EIGHT of the Cartier units are sold and leave the NYSW roster!
Sold/Leased to the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville, for use on the new WNY&P base out of Olean, NY.
Check the NY Alcos page for the continuing saga and timeline on the Cartiers.
No one is sure when the last Cartier unit operated with the Susquehanna, but it was sometime in June or July.
It seems Susquehanna's last great Alco era is over.

August  2007 -          The eight NYSW Cartier units are gathering in small herds, hopefully to  move soon to the LAL!
                                    5 units are in Binghamton, 3664, 3666, 3668, 3670, and 3672

End of year 2007 summary:

2007 was quite a year of change for the Susquehanna motive power fleet..and all in the "negative direction" (from a railfan perspective anyway..)

The "Last Great Susquehanna Alco Era" ended in 2007, when all eight of the big Cartier Alcos and MLW's were sold off and moved over to Cohocton, NY
with new owner LAL-WNYP.

Old NYSW power begins to be removed from service, including all three GP18's, the GP20's and other older power..
details below.

NYSW CEO Walter Rich passed away in 2007.

The NYSW roster shrunk from 35 to 25 units during 2007. NW2 116, SD45 3614, and the Eight Cartier units left the roster.
No new units arrived during 2007. (except for leased power)

February 14, 2008 - reports on-line that the three SD70's may be moving from Ohio to Florida. might be just a rumour.

March 25, 2008 - Reports reach the railfan forums that NYSW is beginning to sell off its entire passenger fleet.
All passenger cars and the RDC's are up for sale. 15 passenger cars, 4 RDC's and the 0-6-0 in Cooperstown.

April 16 2008 - First report that one of the passenger cars has been sold. Former NYSW Diner Lounge Car # 507 heads to its new home in Florida.

April 2008 - Over the last few months, a line of eight stored locomotives has developed in Binghamton.
The string of stored/dead units includes:

                       GP18 1800
                       GP18 1802
                       GP18 1804

                       GP20 2062
                       GP20 2066

                       U23B 2302
                       GP38 2012
NW2 116     (privately owned, not officially on the NYSW roster)

It is especially sad to see the three GP18's out of service. These were the oldest continually operating NYSW units, bought new in 1962.
Thats 46 years of service with the same railroad! It seems their days with the Susquehanna are now over.
Although the fate of all of these units is currently unknown. hopefully they will be sold and not scrapped.

The list of OOS units grows disturbingly long...and perhaps not coincidintally, EVERY OOS unit happens to be a 4-axle unit,
and all IN service units are 6-axle..

April 30, 2007 - SD70 4052 is in Florida, heading to the FEC shop at New Symrna Beach for some work.
perhaps this is the source of the rumour that the SD70's are "being sold to the FEC"
perhaps they are only going to the FEC for some work instead.

April 2010 - Four NYSW units leave the roster. the big story is the three GP18's are leaving!
these are very historic Susquehanna units! They were bought new by the susquehanna in 1962..48 years on the roster!
They were the first yellowjackets! and wore their yellowjacket schemes (with some variation) their entire NYSW careers.
The three classic GP18's were sold to the East Penn Railway in early 2010, and they departed Binghamton
for the last time on April 15, 2010. They then went to the NYSW in New Jersey, and then arrived at their new home,
The East Penn Railway, Kennet Square, PA, on May 5, 2010. as of August 2010 the units are stored, but it is believed
East Penn intends to operate them!

NYSW GP38 2012 (the only GP38 NYSW has ever owned! so far)
was also sold in April 2010, to the North Shore, she is now NSHR 2010, now with the North Shore in Newberry, PA.

The NYSW Roster drops to only 19 units.
10 oos/stored, only nine units operating!

September 2010 - Reports state F45 3636 is going to Utica to have usable parts stripped out..it is unlikely she will operate again.
3636 has been OOS since May 2008.

December 21, 2010 - the SD70's return home! after 10 years of being leased out, and roaming all over the country in lease service,
the trio of of SD70's, NYSW 4050, 4052 and 4054 are finally back home in Binghamton...the units arrived in Binghamton
                                      under their own power.

2011

As the NYSW roster continues to shrink year after year, 2011 begins with only 19 units on the roster:
12 operating, and 7 stored.

NYSW roster on January 1, 2010

2062 - EMD GP20 - OOS/Stored Binghamton
2064 - EMD GP20 - OOS/Stored Binghamton
2066 - EMD GP20 - OOS/Stored Binghamton

3010 - EMD SD40T-2 - operating
3012 - EMD SD40T-2 - operating
3014 - EMD SD40T-2 - operating
3016 - EMD SD40T-2 - operating

3018 - EMD SD40-2 - operating

3020 - EMD SD40 - OOS Utica

3022 - EMD SD40 - operating

3040 - EMD GP40 - operating
3042 - EMD GP40 - OOS Utica.

3618 - EMD SD45 - operating
3634 - EMD SD45 - operating

3636 - EMD F45 - OOS Utica.

4050 - EMD SD70M  - operating.
4052 - EMD SD70M  - operating.
4054 - EMD SD70M   - operating.

March 17, 2011 - All three SD70's are in service.

June 13, 2011 - Two of the SD70's, 4052 and 4054, are OOS, stored in Binghamton. 4050 is operating on the Northern division.

June 15, 2011 - All three of the SD70's are now OOS in Binghamton..stored.

October 2011 - NYSW 2300, GE B23-7, is sold to the Finger Lakes Railway..This was the last GE on the NYSW roster..
This makes the NYSW, for the first time ever, an all-EMD railroad!

November 2011 - a set of CEFX GP20D units are being leased by NYSW, CEFX 2010 and 2029.
these units are often mistakenly called "Gensets"..they are not gensets..they are "traditional" diesels, GP20D units.
highly rebuilt yes, and they have cabs that look like gensets..but they are not.

November 2011 - Five CEFX SD40M-2 units are also now on NYSW, also leased..these were originally SP and ATSF SD45's..
the five SD40M-2's are CEFX  3124, 3126,  3131, 3143 and 3147, all are in the CEFX blue scheme and with their original SD45 carbodies.

November 2011 - and an 8th CEFX leaser, SD40-2 CEFX 3108, in Grey.

November 2011 - and the next big "CEFX leaser" news of 2011, reports state NYSW will perhaps be buying as many as Eight SD60 units from CEFX!
As of November 2011, this news is all still nebulous..more details as they become available.

November 2011 - Three more NYSW units are spotted dead in Binghamton, SD40T-2 3010, and both remaining SD45's 3618 and 3634.
The SD45 Era on the NYSW, which began in 1986, might be over..there are no longer any operating SD45's..

3010 will likely be returned to service..the SD45's? perhaps not..

November 2011 is notable because it is the first time in NYSW history that the number of leased units surpassed the number of operating NYSW units!

2011 will be remembured as the year the SD70's returned, but only for a short reprieve on home rails.
by the end of 2011 all three are OOS in Binghamton, fate uncertain.

And 2011 was also the year of the multiple CEFX leasers..and possibly a brace of new SD60's, coming soon..

2012

As 2012 begins, only 6 NYSW units are active! 12 are OOS (18 total on the roster) and 9 Leased units are also operating with NYSW, as discussed above.
This is the smallest amount of active units we have seen in..well..ever.
In January 2012 NYSW is running with 6 NYSW units and 9 leased units.

2012 begins with a notable roster change..with the sale of NYSW 2300 in October 2011, NYSW is, for the first time ever, an all-EMD railroad!

NYSW SD60's.
The big news of 2012 is NEW SUSQUEHANNA LOCOMOTIVES! :)
see this thread for the whole story.
The story began in November 2011, first as a rumour, and was confirmed as a fact on December 5, 2011, by Kingfish.
The units are Six former SOO SD60's, technically being leased by NYSW, but they will be painted up in yellowjacket colors!
and will recieve NYSW road numbers..So for the purposes of this webpage, I am going to count them as "official" units on the roster,
not lease units..but its a grey area..

For awhile, there was the distinct possibility that one them could be painted in a NYSW "Heritage" scheme!
and some artwork was worked up:

(again, see the thread linked above for the full story)
This was actually being considered by the railroad..but in the end, it didnt happen, and all six units were delivered in new Yellowjacket paint.
(which is fine! they still look awesome!)

The locomotives are being rebuilt at "VMV Paducahbilt" shops, Paducah, KY" , the six units are:

EMD SD60 - nee EMDX 9016 - to GMTX 9016 - to NYSW 3800
EMD SD60 - nee EMDX 9044 - to GMTX 9044 - to NYSW 3802
EMD SD60 - nee EMDX 9061 - to GMTX 9061 - to NYSW 3804
EMD SD60 - nee EMDX 9067 - to GMTX 9067 - to NYSW 3806
EMD SD60 - nee EMDX 9082 - to GMTX 9082 - to NYSW 3808
EMD SD60 - nee EMDX 9094 - to GMTX 9094 - to NYSW 3810

All built new as EMD lease units in 1986.
They were first EMDX units, "leased to Oakway"..then to GMTX, then to NYSW.
Before being repainted into NYSW Yellowjacket colors in 2012, they only wore the EMD blue & white paintscheme.
See here for photos of the units in their previous paintschemes.
And here is a beautiful builders photo of the class unit.

March 2012 - "Kingfish" began providing photos of the SD60's being rebuilt in Paducah..they were posted in the thread on railroad.net.

March 2012 - The "Trains newswire" (by Trains magazine) gave an outline of the NYSW Roster status:
The status of the remainder of the NYSW motive power fleet stands as follows:
a.. CEFX SD40-2 lease units currently assigned to road trains are scheduled to go offline in July 2012
b.. GP20 2062-2064-2066 are for sale or will be scrapped in 2012
c.. GP40 3040 will continue in service at Utica, N.Y.
d.. GP40 3042 will be kept stored unserviceable pending future expansion plans
e.. SD40-2s 3012-3014-3016-3018-3022 will remain in service with minimal out of service time dependent on traffic volumes
                        f.. SD45-2 3618 & 3634 and SD40-2 3010 will remain stored serviceable pending traffic changes
                        g.. F45 3636 and SD40 3020 are to be scrapped on site in 2012
h.. SD70Ms 4050, 4052, and 4054 are parked pending rebuild/lease out or rebuild and use on line decision.
                        - from the "Trains newswire"
(None of the rumoured scrappings happened in 2012, or 2013)

April 15, 2012 - The first photo of a Yellowjacket SD60 appears online! :) (inside the shop)

April 23, 2012 - The first photos of a complete SD60, out in the sun, appear online!

May 6, 2012 - The first SD60, 3810, heads out from Paducah to travel to it's new home with the NYSW.

May - August 2012 - The rest of the SD60's were released, as they were completed.

August 25, 2012 - All six of the new Yellowjacket SD60's are in service with NYSW.

November 2012 -  "For everyone not in the NYSW Yahoo group, a roster update was posted this morning. To sum it up:
The SD70m's and the SD45s are for sale
The GP20s will be scrapped if they are not sold.
SD60 3808 is apparently OOS with major problems
Among 3010, 3020, 3042, and 3636 2 are reportedly going to be converted to gensets and returned to the NYSW for service, with 3042 being the top prospect for this.
And on a seperate note GMTX 499 has been working in Northern NJ over the past week doing local trains with CSX 2732"
                                    - posted by "Sportsguy" in this thread.

2013

December 2013 - SD40-2  3018 is reported OOS in Binghamton.

and that appears to be the *only* Motive Power news from 2013!
2013 was a very stable year for the NYSW roster, most likely due to the new SD60's delivered in 2012.
None of the rumoured locomotive scrappings (GP20's and F45) have yet happened as of the end of 2013.
